Self Guided Tour
The newly landscaped grounds of historic Capitol Square are open to the public from
7 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week. Numerous memorial trees marked with ground plaques and twelve monumental statues honor military, cultural and political figures in Virginia’s eventful history. A new monument honoring Virginians who worked for civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s is currently in development. Two decorative fountains dating from the 1850s are located in the southern portion of the square, below and on either side of the Capitol.
Curving hard-surface pathways, shade trees, and convenient benches invite pedestrians to explore the approximately twelve acres of grounds surrounding the Capitol. Maps of the square and information about the monuments are available inside the Bank Street entrance to the Capitol complex seven days a week. Virginia state travel counselors are on duty Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the historic red brick bell tower, located in the southwest corner of the square. Free maps and brochures detailing attractions located throughout the Commonwealth are available there.
