The
desks in the Senate Chamber have been in use since
1906. Each desk has a speaker, a microphone, and an
electronic voting panel which allows the members to
vote “YEA,” “NAY,”
or “RULE 36” which indicates an abstention
(no vote). Each desk also has a “SPEAK” button,
to indicate the member wishes to speak, a “FRONT” button
, which is activated by the Clerk when a member is needed
at the Clerk’s desk, and a “PAGE”
button, which alerts the pages seated on the benches that
the member requires assistance.
